How to Use a Prong Collar
Prong collars can be intimidating when you don't understand how to use them properly.
The purpose of a prong collar is to stop the dog from pulling and to obtain better control while walking your dog. Prong collars make a correction by "pinching" the dog's neck when the dog pulls. Then, when the dog stops pulling, the "pinching" correction is released, allowing the collar to rest on the dog's neck.
To choose the correct prong collar for your dog:
1. First choose the proper prong size. Consider the size of the dog and how much fur they have.
2. Then, measure the inches around the dog's neck.
3. If the length of the collar with the correct prong size is too long or too short, simply purchase additional links (or remove links) to make the collar the appropriate length.
To use a prong collar correctly:
1. When walking a dog with a prong collar you may need to make small corrections to get your dog's attention or refocus their attention.
2. To make a small correction, simply tug up on the leash using a small wrist motion.
3. Never yank on the leash making a large motion with your forearm. This could injure the dog.
If the prong collar is still not making the correction:
1. If the dog is still pulling it may be that you have too large a prong or too large a length (too many prongs on the collar).
2. Smaller prongs are sometimes more successful at making the correction than larger prongs on medium sized dogs with short hair.
3. Having a prong collar that is too long with too many prongs can slide down the neck and not be in the appropriate position to make the correction.
4. The collar should be worn at the top of the dog's neck directly under the chin. Sometimes the collar must be re-adjusted during walks.
